Lars Boom remains on course to win the Tour of Britain after finishing second in the fourth stage of the race.

The 25-year-old from Vlijmen stayed with a leading group of 25 riders despite the best efforts of Team Sky, whose leader Geraint Thomas remains 12 seconds behind Boom in the overall classification.

However, there was worse news for Boom’s team-mate, sprinter Theo Bos, who fell back on one of the two climbs between Welshpool and Caerphilly and dropped out of the race.

The 184 km stage was won by Norwegian world road race champion Thor Hushovd, with Boom close behind in second.

Boom’s biggest challenge is likely to be Sunday’s final stage, an individual time trial around London, when Thomas will be hoping to overturn his lead.
