About the Amsterdam Herald

The Amsterdam Herald was founded in September 2011 with the aim of providing a comprehensive English-language news service from the Netherlands. It is not related to the newspaper of the same name which briefly existed in Amsterdam, New York, at the end of the nineteenth century.

At the moment we publish a small selection of news stories on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday each week. We are hoping to expand this operation in the near future.

Our news is sourced directly from Dutch newspapers, broadcasters and press releases. We are open and upfront about this and always credit the original source in every story, so that readers with a knowledge of Dutch can go directly to the original news source. We would like over time to widen our range to include feature-length pieces, comment and opinion and original journalism.

Photographs are taken from Creative Commons sources. In line with Creative Commons guidelines we always endeavour to credit photographers and include a link to their blog or website. If you feel your photograph has been used inappropriately please contact us at news@amsterdamherald.com with details. We are currently not in a position to pay for photographs but will consider setting up a payment system once our resources permit it.

Our news agenda reflects the kind of audience we hope to build - people living in the Netherlands, or with a strong connection to the country, whose first or second language is English and who want to be better informed about what is going on. They will probably be settled in the country or expect to live there for some time, work and/or socialise with Dutch people and want to be able to discuss the news of the day. They will often have some knowledge of Dutch but find it more comfortable or convenient to keep up with the news in English. Our agenda is not political but we lean towards covering macro-politics rather than micro-politics - a story about an internal coalition dispute between the CDA and VVD parties is less interesting to us than changes to pensions or health insurance. Culture and lifestyle issues are also high on the agenda.

If you would like to contribute, please send a brief pitch to news@amsterdamherald.com. We are not currently able to pay for contributions: this website is in the early stages of development and earns no income. If at any point we begin to make money one of our first priorities will be to look for ways to recognise our contributors.
We want contributed articles to be original but place no restriction on them being offered for publication elsewhere.

If you have any other queries or comments, please contact us on news@amsterdamherald.com. We welcome your feedback, particularly in the early stages of this venture.
